The Cherokee National Forest as seen from the Appalachian Trail at the top of Roan Mountain.

At this point on the AT, there is a big clear bald that straddles the Tennessee / North Carolina. The background of this image is of the mountains on the North Carolina side of the mountain.

During a trip to Roan Mountain State Park, my family and I rented a cabin for a few days and took time to visit some of the trails and waterfalls around the area. Our first stop for hiking was an area of the Appalachian Trail at the top of Roan Mountain. We had left the cabin that morning knowing that it had snowed the night before (just a little bit), and it was still a little chilly when we left, but in planning for our trip, we didn’t bring our “big” winter coats. So hiking this trail with no trees to protect up from the winds, we (mainly me) ended up freezing, so we didn’t stay on the trail very long and ended up going to other places, but none the less, it was fun to be up there and to see the beauty.
